A storm throws a ship of nobles onto an island ruled by the exiled magician Prospero, who has spent twelve years waiting for exactly this. Among the survivors is Alonso, King of Naples, who helped depose Prospero and who now believes the sea has taken his son.
What follows is a day of spirits, illusions and staged grief that walks everyone to the edge of revenge before Prospero chooses forgiveness instead. Staged outdoors in Central Park and Prospect Park, played on grass at the water's edge with the lake standing in for the sea.
Alonso spends the play in mourning, a king stripped of power and certain his child is dead. Playing him meant carrying guilt as grief, and letting the island break him open before it forgives him.
